shift and cannot leave their station while on duty, the volunteer firefighters have no assigned shift and do not have to spend
any time at the station. All volunteer firefighters have a voice pager and they keep their firefighting gear in
their personal vehicle. When they are needed, the paid platoon on duty will have them paged via their voice pagers.

The Westfield Fire Department is dispatched through a 911 central
dispatch, located at 425 East Broad Street inside Westfield Police headquarters. When a resident calls
911 this is where the call goes. If it is the fire department the person is requesting, The dispatcher takes all
of the information and activates a tone alert system in both fire stations. After two short
loud tones the dispatcher will announce the address and type of emergency that has been reported. The
Address and type of emergency will determine which fire units will respond. Once the
fire units leave the station they operate on radio frequency 476.825 MHZ to communicate with
each other and the dispatcher. Each fire vehicle is equipped with a mobile radio and
each firefighter on duty has their own portable radio for the shift. There are also three base
station radios, one each at 911 Central Dispatch, Fire Headquarters and Two House.
Monday through Friday at 7:05 PM the 911 Central
Dispatch conducts a test of the voice pagers for the volunteer firefighters and the off duty platoon
that is due to report to work the next morning. On Saturday nights at 7:05 PM the test is performed
by the firefighters on duty at Two House who test the pagers of the volunteer firefighters and
all four paid platoons. The Sunday night test is done the same as the Saturday night test except it
is performed by the firefighters that are on duty at Fire Headquarters. In addition, The tone alert system
is tested, once at 8:00 AM. This is all done to ensure that all of the alerting equipment
is working properly.
